Basketball in Michigan has always been an epicenter of exceptional talent and rugged comradery. The Bad Boys Era (The Detroit Pistons) and The Flintstones Of MSU (Michigan State Spartans) are just some of the trios that defied generations of sports teams to come in the future. Kevin Mays is adding to the historical tree of basketball talent with the recent announcement of his new basketball franchise, Flint United.

Kevin is a Flint native with a knack for basketball and proven experience to match his efforts. He’s a 2007 Carman-Ainsworth graduate and two-time NCAA All-American athlete with a background in sports marketing. Aside from that, he realizes how important it is to bring a team to Flint, considering the many challenges the Vehicle City has endured over the years. Sports are always the common thread that binds life together, whether things are rising or turbulent.

“My goals for the franchise and the league are to provide opportunities for athletes and professionals to maximize their potential, no matter what that is,” said Mays. “Bringing this organization to my hometown, with community at the forefront, I know I don’t stand alone in that mission. Community development is the ultimate focus of the league, our front office, as well as every other franchise across the nation.”

Flint United resides under The Basketball League, a minor basketball league, which started in 2017 and is ran by Evelyn and David Magley. Evelyn is the first African American and the first woman to own an American men’s sports league. David is a former Mr. Basketball winner in Indiana and played collegiate basketball at The University of Kansas. David also was selected in the second round of the 1982 NBA Draft.

“The Basketball League was created to impact the youth of America through the positions we are afforded as athletes,” said David Magley. “We genuinely focus on the athlete as a person, providing financial literacy education, teaching them how to truly engage the community, and then helping promote them to higher levels through our agency arm TBL Reps.”

Flint United is scheduled to begin in 2021, with significant boundaries being put in place due to COVID-19. Kevin wants to ensure that Flint United starts without a hitch.

“The league is scheduled to begin in March 2021, and we are still in discussion with several venues to serve as Flint United’s homecourt,” said Mays. “Also, most importantly, in the face of COVID-19, the league has established a streaming service partnership that will allow our fans to see all 24 games, whether they’re in the stands or at home. The roster will be filled through a series of combines and a final team training camp that will take place across the Midwest region.”
